Mystery Painting Description
by Matthew and Brian W.

These are our directions for making our painting. The colors are gray, black, red, blue and yellow. There is a square in the middle that is closest to the top left hand corner. Everything is outlined in black.

The black square is in the top right hand corner. Yellow is just to the left of black so it touches it. The red rectangle is at the bottom right hand corner. The blue vertical rectangle is to the left side of the big square that is gray, like the background. The blue rectangle is on the bottom half of the square. All of the rectangles touch the big square except the red one. That is how you paint our picture.

Analysis
by Brian W. and Matthew

Walter Hays did a good job on some things. They did a good job on the black square. It was in the right spot, so was the yellow one and the red one. There were a couple of things that we didn’t mention that made it look different. We forgot to mention that the blue rectangle doesn’t touch the corners. We should’ve said light gray instead of gray. Also, we forgot mention that no two rectangles that are either red, blue, yellow, or black are supposed to touch. The only exception is the yellow and black. Lastly we forgot to say the biggest square is not touching the corner.

The painting is called Tableau 2. It was painted in 1922. Piet Mondrian painted it. It is on a 55.6 cm by 53.4 cm canvas. He used oil on canvas. The painting is at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
