Waves

Mystery Painting Description
by Benny and Nick

First you need the colors red, a mixture of a lot of white and a little yellow, blue, and yellow. There is a blue wave coming from the top, the top edge takes up 1/3 of the line on the top. It curves to the left. Then there is a red spiral that starts at the same place as the blue line, only it goes right then left. It starts on the bottom and overlaps the blue stripe and the yellow stripe. Then there is a yellow wave that comes from the top right. It curves left, then points right. All of them have a dark black outline. The background is the mixture. We found out it is harder to describe a painting than it sounds.

Analysis
by Nick and Benny

We will tell you what the students in Walter Hays did right. They got the right type of color for each wave, and got the shape pretty much the same. Also they got the outline.

Here are the things that we should do to change our description. We should change the shade of the colors, and they should make outline less jagged. We should have said the black outline should be smooth. Also the waves are in the wrong places. We should have said the blue wave is in the center of the painting. They forgot to put in a background. We could have said the background is white with a little bit of yellow. Also they made the waves thinner than they should be. The base of the wave is twice as thick as the tip of the wave. The waves look like they are twisted together on their painting. And they ended them flat. We should have said the red wave overlaps the blue one. Next time we'll tell them to make it pointish.

We think the students at Walter Hays did a great job!

Les Vagues means The Waves. It is a lithograph by Alexander Calder that is 75 by 110 centimeters. It was made in 1974.
